The Lawn
Dimensions:
The outside dimensions of the
standard lawn are 35 yards by 28 yards. It has a "one yard line" inside this
boundary. This rectangle is halved along its longer axis and shorter axis so
the Peg is located in the middle ie 14 yards from longer boundary 17.5 from
the shorter boundary.
Hoops Location:
No 5 and 6 hoops are on the
longer axis, 7 yards either side of the peg. Thus they are 14 yards from the
outside longer boundaries (East and West) and 10.5 yards from the shorter
boundary (North and South). The rectangle is further halved on the longer
axis so the other four hoops are located on these quarter lines 7 yards in
from their adjacent boundary lines.
Attitude:
The sides are named after the
four points of the compass but not aligned with the magnetic North.
The corners are further named for the flag colours and their related Hoops
so that:-
No 1 hoop in the Blue, South West corner.
No 2 is in Red at North West.
No 3 in Black in North East
No 4 in Yellow in South East.
No 5 and 6 on the centre line
Peg in the middle.
Because it is too hard to count beyond six, the Hoops are now run backwards
or counter clockwise. "Hoop 2" now becomes "Hoop 1 Back" and so forth until
we get to "4 back". From this point, the Hoops are then called "Penultimate"
and then "Rover" as the last before the Peg
Baulk Lines:
The 13 yard long "A" Baulk
Line is on the South "One Yard Line" from the centre (line) to the West One
Yard Line.
The "B" Baulk Line is similar on the North "One Yard Line" and diagonally
opposite "A" Baulk Line.

The Equipment
The Balls:
Croquet is played with four
balls - Blue and Black against Red and Yellow (the same colours as the
corner flags.
In Banked Games, that is, two games shareing the same lawn, Secondary
colours are used by the other teams. Brown and Green play against Pink and
White.
Neither Banked Games are related except by good manners)
The Peg:
The centre "Peg" is white with
the four prime colours - Blue, Red, Black and Yellow with a smaller dowel
for the attaching of clips.
The Clips:
When the Hoop is successfully
run the coloured Clip, for that ball, is placed on the crown of the next
Hoop out (clockwise). On the backward stretch, the Clip is on Hoop leg going
anticlockwise. Thus all players can identify which ball is for which Hoop or
Peg - and the scores can also be tallied.
Half Court:
A Half Court is usually 24
yards by 16 yards with the corner hoops 4 yards in from both adjacent
boundaries and the Rover and Penultimate hoops 6 yards from the peg on
either side on the longer axis. All else is similar to the Standard Court.
This is a good size for learners and on the front lawns of smaller home
blocks.
Slim Courts:
A Slim Court is a converted
tennis court of 35 yards by 16 yards or more. With Standard Court distances
between Hoops except when going East or West.
In which case the Peg (and Hoops on the half N/S axis) is Standard but 8
yards from the sides rather than 14 yards and outside Hoops on a quarter
axis are 4 yards in - or greater as the width permits. All else is similar
to a Standard Court.
You can, of course, have any measurement that will fit for Garden Croquet
