Etiquette:
Protocols are the accepted Customs,
Conduct or Etiquette of your Club as opposed to and in addition to "THE LAWS".
Basically, the idea is to make everyone feel comfortable, happy and at ease. It
is not the done thing to call someone's attention to something they may have
accidentally done to make them feel small. The teller of tails to feel BIG is
not really good manners in polite society.
NB.
Each Croquet Player is a Referee of his own game and the Laws take precedence
over Protocols where "Faults" or "errors" are committed - so informing the
opposition is sometimes necessary.
Preferred Dress:
(1) Most Clubs have a
preferred dress - particularly about the type of shoes worn. Shoes should be
flat soled to protect the lawn.
Daily Register to Play
(2) A minimum time is allowed
(usually 15 minutes) prior to hit off for Members and Visitors to register for
play.
Play Roster:
(3) A roster is sometimes
posted on the Notice Board for players to indicate intension to play on future
days.
Turn your Bum into the
Court:
(4) When hitting off at the
"Baulk Line" turn your rear end into the court as you measure up and place the
ball. This is not so that you don't "offend" others by your big bum in their
nose. It is to ensure that your ball is put in exactly square. If the Captain
pulls you up at the start it's to let you know someone is watching. They want
the ball put in "where it went out" and that can only be done exactly, when you
are facing the boundary line. It might be a case of wiring your ball from a
future shot, otherwise to your opponents disadvantage.
Replace the Clips:
(5) When you have run your
hoop or peeled your partner, remove the appropriate clip(s) from that Hoop and
insure the placement on the next Hoop to be run before leaving the court.
Time's Up
(6) When time is almost
up vacate the lawn quickly so you might have an extra shot after the "Bell"
Double Banked:
(7) When games are
Double Banked players should be aware of the course of play in the other game,
especially when stepping onto the court at the start of a turn. They should not
cross another players line of aim. When playing the secondary colours wait until
the primary players have all started and the first player has had a stroke in
his second "in".
Vacate the Lawn:
(8) Players should not
take undue time in play and when the turn is over, vacate the lawn to the
sidelines so the opposition can go on.
Precedence:
(9) If a player is making a
break, he should normally be given precedence i9n double banked games.
Who's First?
(10) If two players are
approaching the same Hoop and both are making breaks, precedence should normally
be given to the player most likely to get clear of the Hoop first.
Ask Permission:
(11) You should ask
permission from the other team to lift any balls and mark their position. A ball
should not be lifted and marked if it is in a critical position near a Hoop or
the peg, or if it is wired from another ball.
Marked Balls:
(12) A marked ball, when
moved, may be left on the court, but should never be placed in a Hoop or against
the Peg.
Marked Balls
Replaced:
(13) Marked balls should be replaced in their correct positions as soon as
possible.
No Swearing Aloud or
Obscene Gestures:
(14) Croquet is a game for
Ladies and Gentlemen - therefore no swearing aloud or obscene gestures to be
seen.
Self Defence:
(15) Croquet mallets should
not be used as weapons - except in self-defence.
No Cheating:
(16) Obey "The Laws".
Ladies and Gentlemen do not cheat and act as their own Referees when doing so.
Above all - you must have a good time -
otherwise??
But!
